AGE AT THE TIME OF TESTIMONY

85 years old

He was orphaned and under the care of his grandparents. He witnessed the 1930 pogrom in Borsa where they burned two thirds of the houses in the town. With the Russian invasion in 1940, he sympathized with communist ideas. He signed up to study free of charge at the university in the Soviet Union. He worked at a tractor factory in Zlatoust, in the Urals, and after missing 3 days of work because of fever, he was convicted to 8 years of prison in Vorkuta. He was there for 4 years and managed to escape. He arrived in Czernowitz where he found out that his family had been massacred and that only a few survived. He reunited with some uncles and obtained false documents to leave Romania. He wanted to go to Israel, but they detained him and sent him to a concentration camp in Cyprus. He lived in Israel a few years and traveled to Chile where he met his future wife.
